The National Academic Theater named after Yanka Kupala is the oldest theater in Belarus. The theater is rightly called the "first stage of the republic". In 1887, after a fire that occurred in the former city theater of Minsk, the city council held a meeting in support of the initiative of Minsk governor Prince NN. Trubetskoi on the project of a new theater building. The architects of the project were K. Kozlovsky and K. Vvedensky.
The solemn ceremony of the beginning of construction took place on June 26, 1888 (according to the old style). Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich and Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna threw several gold coins on the brick. The Provincial Theater was opened on June 5, 1890, and since September 14, 1920 the theater existed as the Belarusian State Theater. Initially, under one roof there were three troupes: Belarusian, Russian and Jewish, who subsequently gained independence; At the theater there was a choir, a ballet troupe and a symphony orchestra (in 1933 they separated into the National Theater of Opera and Ballet). In 1944 it was renamed in honor of the classic of Belarusian literature, the poet Yanka Kupala. March 29, 2013 was opened after the reconstruction. In today's repertoire of the theater more than 30 performances. A special role is played by national dramaturgy, on the basis of which the best performances were created: "Pavlinka" by Yanka Kupala, "Symon-music" by Yakub Kolas, "Pinsk szlyachta" by Vincent Dunin-Martsinkevich.
