Neude square and Library
Overview
Reviews 0

This square, de Neude, has been here since 1347 and has had many functions. It has been used for tournaments, for cattle and corn markets. Till late in the 18th century there were public executions, a burning pyre for witches and heretics. Then it became a center of commerce, with many craftsmen and shops. During the 1980's, it was a parking lot and nowadays it has become a summer terrace and festival area.

The imposing building you see is currently the City Library. Till 2011 this was a postal office, the last one standing in the Netherlands. Only after a lot of debate and public outcry, in 2015 it was decided this building had to keep a public function. It took five years to renovate the building, on 13th of march 2020 the new public Library opened.

Feel free to wander in, the entrance hall is breathtaking. The entire building can be visited, feel free. Don't forget though, this is a place of study, silence is expected.

The building and the square both have been subject to transformation. New traditions, new culture and new technological possibilities are constantly reframing what public space should be used for.

Thinking back to the life map assignment on day 2 of the training, you have been going through transformations as well. Looking to the future and your partnership. What transformation is underway, waiting around the corner? Discuss this with your partner.

Visually reflect on the discussion by taking a Tiny friend picture.
