Glynn Academy was chartered by the General Assembly in 1788 making it the second oldest public high school in the American South, and the sixth oldest public High School in the United States. The Greek Revival building was originally built in 1840 and is said to be the oldest wooden schoolhouse in Georgia. In 1915 it was moved out to the western part of the county and used there as the consolidated school for African-American students. Later becoming a community center for the Sterling community. Then in 2008 the building was moved back to the campus where it started. The building was added to the National register of Historic Places in 2011.
