In the distant May of 1947, a Musical comedy theater was opened in Omsk. In 1982, the theater staff moved from the old small building on Lenin Street to the new one – to the 10 years of October Street. Besides that, due to reorganization and relocation, the Musical comedy theater received a higher status – musical theater. Since then, in addition to comedies, operettas and vaudeville, operas and ballets were staged there.
In the first half of the 1980s Omsk had got the largest public buildings, which had a unique appearance. Construction in the historical center of Omsk an ultramodern building of the musical theater caused conflicting opinions during that time. According to the architects, the building was to resemble a piano, a harp, and a floating ship, all at the same time.
The project of a new theater building which could contain 1,200 spectators was developed in 1969 at the Research Institute of spectacular buildings and sports facilities. In 1981 the new theatre was opened.
In 1995, the post-Soviet time, a musical fountain was arranged on the square in front of the theatre (architects A. M. Karimov, V. D. Kiyasow, designer I. A. Vakhitov).
The touring activities of the theater are vast and varied. In addition to performances in many cities of Russia, Kazakhstan, and China, the band of the theater had also visited Switzerland, the USA, Israel, Germany and Japan. Every year since 2004, the governor’s program "From theatre to country " has been implemented in the theater, which is called to acquaint the most remote areas of the Omsk region with the dramatic arts.
