Ozone

Constructed in 1886 the Ozone represents one of the once common bay steamers that travelled from Melbourne to Corio Bay (Geelong). The steamer served a long career transporting people around the bay gaining a reputation as being the fastest steamer in the Port Phillip area. Over her life she was involved in 3 separate collisions including accidentally running down and sinking the fishing vessel May. After serving as a bay ship for a number of decades the ship was sold and scuttled in 1925 as a breakwater in only 3m of water for the bay near Indented head. Another ship, the Dominion, was scuttled for the same purpose and lies only 20m Nth of the Ozone wreck. The ship is easily accessible and visible the beach with its with its paddle wheel extending above the water. It is a popular dive site for learner divers and snorkelers being relatively quite safe. Like many other shipwrecks it has also become an artificial reef housing an array of fish which can be seen swimming amongst Ozone’s boilers, steering quadrant and bow.
