This park received its name on May 5, 1942 in honor of Panfilov division and Almaty people who stopped the fascist tanks near Moscow. The park’s history goes back to 1875. The park changed its name many times since then. It used to be a Starokladbischensky park, Pushkin Gardens, Federation Park, etc.

Back in the 1970s the city had an interesting tradition. There is a diplomatic protocol designed for honored guests. This protocol offers to the guests to plant a blue spruce tree along the central path of the park as a symbol of their stay in Almaty and as a dedication to military glory and patriotism of Kazakh people.

The park has a path honoring the heads of states. The trees along that path were planted by the leaderss of Russia, China, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan, etc.

There is a memorial of Fame dedicated to the participants of the Civil War and the Great Patriotic War, the Cathedral Ascension Cathedral, Museum of national musical instruments in the park.
