This peat harvesting company was founded in Denmark in 1905 as a family business. Currently, the company’s peat processing and substrate production plants operate in five countries - Denmark, Latvia, Russia, Spain, and Great Britain. All factories together produce 2.4 million m³ of peat substrate each year, most of it is prepared in the factory in Latvia, in Baloži, which was opened in 1998. The main raw material of the produced substrates is peat, which is brought to the Baloži factory from 10 peat extraction sites managed by the company itself, as well as purchased from other peat producers. The products are exported to approximately 90 countries not only in Europe but also the markets of China, the USA, and South America have already been conquered. In autumn 2016, a wood fiber plant was opened next to the peat factory in Baloži. It is the first plant in the Baltics to produce wood fiber for professional needs as a peat substitute for export. Wood fiber is used to replace soil not, as usual, to produce paper or building materials. Peat as a resource is very slowly renewable, therefore, its replacement by fiber from wood chips ensures both more environmentally friendly production and adds value to lightly processed wood. The peat harvesting and processing company SIA “Pindstrup Latvia” employs about 400 people, during the season up to 650 employees. The Baloži factory has about 140 employees - mostly locals from Baloži and the surrounding area.
