Most tourists visiting Rome nowadays come by plane, but this wasn't always so. Centuries ago, foreigners entered Rome through the Porta del Popolo, the northern gate of the eternal city. This area has been called “Il Tridente” or “the fork”, because the three main roads starting at the Piazza del Popolo have a fork-like shape.
