Plaça del Blat

Plaza del Blat, is the most emblematic square of Valls. It is called like that since s. XV and its name is due to the wheat trade that was made. We found the House of the Villa, Can Segarra (Official School of Languages) and several restaurants and commerce establishments. In this square the streets of the Court, Major and the Plaza de la Iglesia begin. It is an urbanistic complex with arcades on two of its four sides, and a fountain of neoclassical style built in 1891 that is at the foot of the stairs that gain the unevenness of the square. But, it is more known for being considered the "zero kilometer" of the casteller world, since it is where Colla Joves Xiquets de Valls and Colla Vella of the Xiquets de Valls, founders of this vallenca tradition, since November 16 2010 when it was declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (UNESCO), universal. In the Plaza del Blat, performances of castellers are celebrated by San Juan (night of June 23 and 24), by the National Holiday of Catalonia (September 10 at night), by Firagost (first Wednesday of August) and by Santa Úrsula (first Sunday after October 21).
