French politician, Georges Benjamin Clemenceau was born on September 28th, 1881 in the Vendée. He occupies variouspolitical offices as a mayor of the 18th districtof Paris, president of the town council of Parisand a radical republican deputy. It defends thecommunards but also the captain Dreyfusthrough newspapers like Justice, the companyof the human rights and the citizen and theDawn. He militates for the separation of the Church and the State, like for the restitution ofthe Alsace-Moselle lost at the time of the waragainst Prussia in 1871. Senator in 1902, thenin 1906 Home Secretary, at the same time aspresident of the council, it is called “the Tiger”for his firmness and his repression of thestrikes. Between 1909 and 1912, below theFrench political life, it benefits from it to travelto America from which it brings back newideas. In 1913 it founds the newspaper theFree man in whom it informs French of theimminence of the war and defends theincrease in the duration of the military service.On November 13th, 1917 president Poincaréchooses Clemenceau with the presidency ofthe Council of Ministers and the post of minister of the war. Clémenceau is favorable toa military victory and refuses the peacenegotiated by Poincaré with Charles 1st ofAustria under pretext that it is a trap tended byGermany. Clémenceau prefers to name theFoch general rather in charge of the interalliedtroops than Pétain which he considers toodefeatist. Clémenceau against the opinion ofPoincaré prefers to accept the armistice ofNovember 11th, 1918 which will put an end tocarnage. It represents and defends theinterests of France to the conference of peaceof 1919. They want the restitution of LorraineAlsace, repair and security of the Franco-German border. Clémenceau deserved wellthe nickname of “Father of the victory”. In 1920it leaves the head of the government andwithdraws political life at the 79 years age.Clémenceau will die on September 24th, 1929in Paris.
