Polstraat 2-6
In the corner house of the Grote Kerkhof and the Polstraat, the printer Jacob van Breda lived more than 500 years ago, one of the first printers in the Netherlands. At the top of the facade you can see a facing brick that nicely reflects the work of a printing house in the 16th century. This printer's sign was used by several printing companies in the Netherlands, including Jacob van Breda. The facing brick was manufactured by Ton Mooy.
The facing with the inscription 'Bij den Salvator' refers to the former cemetery on the Grote Kerkhof. The word Salvator is translated as the holy name Saint Salvator, designation for Jesus Christ as Saviour, a statue of which was on the former cemetery.
On the Polstraat side we find two striking bricks made by Jilles Waagmeester at the top of the facades. The globe with image of the Indonesian Archipelago and the barrel refer to trade with the Indonesian Archipelago and the former function of these buildings as warehouses.
