The “Puente de Deusto” is a bascule bridge over the estuary of the town of Bilbao, capital of the province of Bizkaia. This bridge connects Abando and Deusto. The total length of the bridge is 500 meters. The leaves are raised until reaching an angle of 70º on the horizontal. In 1936 the bridge, which had been designed by Ignacio de Rotaeche and José Ortiz de Artiñano, was inaugurated.
The river traffic, essential for the port works that were being carried out at that time in the estuary, made it necessary for these bridges to be designed in such a way as to allow the passage of ships. The solution that was adopted was to build drawbridges similar to those existing in Chicago. This project was approved on July 23, 1931 and construction began in July 1932 under the mandate as mayor of Ernesto Ercoreca, and it was inaugurated on December 7th. It was flown for the defense of the city on June 18, 1937 during the Civil War and between 1938 and 1939, it was rebuilt
Until 1992, a stable traffic of ships was maintained through the waters of the Bilbao estuary, which made it necessary to open the bridge. Its last commercial opening was on May 4, 1995.
