The pool was completed in 1944 and is one of the largest fresh-water swimming pools in the world. It holds 1.25 million gallons of water and is 103 meters long and 25 meters wide. The pool is named for Lt. Gen. Robert Richardson Jr., commander of the Central Pacific Area, who directed the pool to be built. Richardson believed every Soldier should be a swimmer. The U.S. Olympic Diving team used the pool’s diving boards to practice for the 1972 Olympic Games. Today, the pool is used for training Soldiers and recreation.
