Rostov-on-Don is one of the oldest centers of musical life in the South of Russia. The Rostov theater of operetta was founded in 1919. In January 1931, the Rostov theater of musical comedy received a national status. It was one of the best theaters in the Soviet Union and made its mark in the history of music arts. In September 1999, the theater moved to the new building. The modern Rostov State Musical Theater was built in the form of a white grand piano with the open top. The authors of the project design were a group of architects: L.M. Lobak, G.A. Dukov, and V.M. Khafizov.

The theater’s repertoire includes operas, ballets, operettas, musicals, rock operas, musical novellas, symphony concerts, etc. The orchestra was enhanced and the opera and ballet companies were established. The team of performers has been increased over the past years. Today, the vocal company numbers over 60 soloists, the ballet company – over 60 artists, the choir – over 70 singers, and the orchestra – over 100 instrumentalists. Every year the theater delivers nearly 300 performances and concerts on the Grand Stage (1,000 auditorium seats) and Chamber Stage (238 seats) as well as at “White Piano” musical and entertainment center.
