The canal comes from the Colomers old weir and irrigates the left bank of the Ter River. Several streams flow into the canal. The canal serves an important area for farming (vegetable gardens, orchards, rice, cereals ...) and it used to be the power source for the mills of Jafre, Verges, Bellcaire and l'Escala. The origin of the canal is undated; but it is known that it has connection with the Greco-Roman settlement of Empúries. In 1301, the Counts of Empúries, during their dispute with the County of Barcelona, diverted the Ter River and since then the canal partly uses the riverbed of an ancient arm of the Ter.
