Spanish toothcarp (Aphanius iberus)
Overview
Reviews 0

This vertebrate fish inhabits salty waters, marshlands and coastal lagoons, as well as the mouths of rivers, canals and paddy fields. It tolerates a wide range of salt concentration in the water, from hipersaline environments to freshwater, as well as wide temperature ranges. It can live for two years, but most individuals die after one year. The total area where it can be found is less than 500 km2 and its habitat is shrinking due to pollution and fragmentation. Nowadays, Spanish toothcarp populations are restricted to the Mediterranean coast of Spain and north-west Algeria. Photo source: mediterranean.org
