The main hall - Mandapam
This temple is dedicated to the goddess, Mariamman who is known for her healing powers in epidemic diseases such as chicken pox, cholera and smallpox. Sri Mariamman refers to the Mother Goddess who nourishes and protects all beings. The word “Sri” is an honorific attached to deities and to people to denote their high standing. The word “mari” means rain. Sri Mariamman is thus associated with the life-giving and sustaining properties of rain, an important element for rural life.
Raja Rajeswari
Next, look at this group of statues facing the entrance. The central figure is Raja Rajeswari – one of the incarnations of Sri Mariamman, as the ruler of universe.
Mandala
Lookup at the ceiling of the mandapam. You'll see this huge circular diagram. It is a mandala. The mandala symbolizes the state of Nirvana. Nirvana is to be in state where one is free from suffering and liberated from all attachments.
Flagpole
Some days before a major festival or ritual, a flag is raised on the flagpole to announce the start of preparations for it. To prepare for the ceremony, devotees must fast and pray for a period of time. Now we’ll go further into the Vimana or the inner sanctum where the shrines are.
There are various versions and interpretations of stories associated with Hindu deities. The above are not representative of the views of PSM.
