Arctic explorer Sir John Franklin’s expedition of 1845 is remembered at this monument in Waterloo Place. While attempting to chart and navigate a section of the Northwest Passage, Franklin’s ships HMS Terror and HMS Erebus became icebound in the Canadian Arctic 1846. The entire crew of 129 died over the ensuing years.

The monument lists the names of the crew members of both ships in Franklin’s lost expedition.
