That little island is called Strömsborg – Streams castle. And so it has been called over 300 years. All because a man called Ström once bought the island and built a house that looked like a castle on it. Ströms – borg. Streams – castle. So, now you know.
But in the very beginning, the name of the island was Stenskär – the Stone Skerry – and there was a tiny forest on it. But no bridge. If you wanted to go there you had to pay one of the beefy ladies, who rowed the boat taxis at the time, to take you. Those ladies were a bit famous because they swore so much.
At that time, hundreds of years ago, Sweden had a queen called Kristina. And queen Kristina had a small cottage there. A place where she could sit and fish, in peace and quiet, if that’s what she liked. Not too far from the royal palace. That must have been nice for her.
The grand house you can see on the island today is fairly new, just a little over a 100 years old. If you’re wondering what’s inside, I can tell you that it’s offices. But when your grandparents were teenagers it was a place where people went dancing.
