Tabatskuri is a picturesque lake and village located a bit further from the main road in an alpine zone. Getting to it is a challenge due to the inferior road surface. Nevertheless, the lake is definitely a hidden gem of the area and a popular destination for visitors from both Akhalkalaki and, from the other side of the pass, Bakuriani.
Tabatskuri is located at 1991 meters and with its depth of up to 40 meters is one of the deepest lakes in Georgia surrounded by lofty mountains. The village is built on the shore and is primarily populated by Armenians, who make their living by farming and fishing. There is a spot for picnics near the artificial forest on the shore, but it’s always possible to camp or stay with locals and try their cheese and fried potato.
Further out on the lake there is a small island, which is an important bird nesting area.
Getting There: The village has no major public transport connection. There are two options to reach Tabatskuri, one via Tskhratskaro Pass, from Bakuriani and the other from Akalkalaki. When travelling via Tskhratskaro Pass, ID/passport is required at the security checkpoint on the main oil pipeline. Using four-wheel drive is strongly advised.
