Templemore Baths was built in the 1880s at a time when public bathhouses were opening across the city. These baths provided washing and sanitary facilities for the shipyard communities of East Belfast and were therefore an important part of life for women living and working here. Both men and women from the shipyard, the ropeworks and other factories used the baths and pool - especially on a Friday night before going out to the dance halls. Templemore Baths remains a public facility as Templemore Swim and Fitness Centre, having been saved from closure in the 1980s, and as the last surviving Victorian baths in Ireland is undergoing a 17 million pound makeover to restore its historic features and upgrade its facilities. This ensures the survival of Templemore Baths to serve the former shipyard communities in East Belfast for many years to come. Upon leaving the baths, continue along Templemore Avenue in the direction you were travelling.
