The Friendly Grocer

This store was built in 1930 as Tanner’s second Store when there was a need for larger premises and the business was moved “up the hill”. The general store contained a long wooden counter where aproned workers catered to the needs of customers. The store also had a delivery service where people in the district could phone through their orders and have them delivered to the door on a particular day of the week. The façade of the original store has been maintained when the interior was recently modernised. The original brown paper holder from Tanners Store from which all parcels were wrapped and tied with string may be viewed in the replica Tanners Store at the Kenilworth Historical Museum in Alexandra Street.
