The “Hirschgarten”, meaning buck garden, is Munich’s and probably the world’s largest beer garden with seats for 8,000 guests under sunshades and chestnut trees. It is located east of the Castle Nymphenburg, which can be reached in a few minutes from the central train station with S-Bahn lines 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8 to Pasing. Visitors get off at the station “Hirschgarten” on the Friedenheimer Bridge, and then take a short walk. The huge beer garden consists of different sections: one with regular service, one with self-service, and one where people can eat foods they brought in. Drinks must be purchased, however, and according to tradition, guests are expected to clean their mugs themselves! This establishment offers a variety of traditional beers: Augustiner, Tegernsee and Kaltenberger beers. Interested guests can watch the daily tapping of wooden casks that hold up to 200 liters.
