The Frunzenskiy district of St. Petersburg is called after the famous military commander of the Red Army Mikhail Vasilyevich Frunze. On the district's territory were located several settlements, including the villages Volkova and Kupchinova.

The main highway of the old part of Frunzenskiy district is Ligovskiy avenue. Long before the city's foundation, there was a road that led from ancient Novgorod to the Russian settlements on the Neva River. Until 1926, on the place of the avenue existed the Ligovskiy Canal, dug for supplying water for the fountains of the Summer Garden. From the north, the territory of the district is limited by the Obvodniy Canal, which had been built from 1769 to 1833 and was an important navigable city artery.

The district acquired its modern borders in the 70s of the last century. Today it is one of the largest industrial city areas with extensive infrastructure, in which live more than 400,000 residents.
