The Johannes Honterus High School in Brașov is one of the oldest educational establishments in Romania, documented in 1541 as Saxon evangelical gymnasium for higher education, where classes were taught in German.

Valentin Wagner, Honterus’ partner and rector of the school, issued the first school transcript in our country (1544-1810).

In 1977, Johannes Honterus High School had a philological and historical programmes, with one department of mathematics and physics, and later, in 1990, became a theoretical high school.

In front of the high school, there is the statue of Johannes Honterus, pictured with his right hand stretched out towards the current edifice of the school and holding a book in his left hand, with two tiles of important works in the city’s history (Reformationsbüchlein and Schulordnung) being discernible on the book’s pages.
