At the entrance to the special zone of the Sarcophagus is a small museum. Until now, nobody knows how many people died as a result of the Chernobyl disaster. The reactor explosion directly killed 31 staff of the station and firefighters. According to the organization "Union "Chernobyl"", of the 600 000 liquidators 10% died and 165,000 became disabled. According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Health in 2005, from 1987 till 2004, the number of Ukrainians who died in the aftermath of the accident, has reached 530 000 people.
Radition contaminated Kyiv, Zhytomyr, Chernihiv, Cherkasy, Brest, Rivne, Volyn, Gomel, Mogilev, Minsk, Tula, Kaluga, Bryansk, Lipetsk, Belgorod, Kursk and Orel areas. In the post-Soviet era went sad joke: "Kurchatov's dream come true Kurchatov - atom is in every home".
After the evacuation of the 30-kilometer zone around the reactor, wild foxes, boars, moose and wolves, began to repopulate the area.
