The old town of Vidoški is located on the hill above the modern town of Stolac and it represents a defensive structure which is one of the biggest fortresses of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In the 17th century the fortress had 13 towers and it was the best fortified town in Herzegovina. This national monument consists of the lower town, the upper town, the central plateau with a structure dating from the Austro-Hungarian period, the 1200m long access road from the lower gate to the upper gate and the part of the hill bellow the town walls. The old town covers the area of 20.503 m2. It is protected with the line of stone towers and town walls that are about 2m thick and constructed from carved limestone blocks. Along the towers the town has ten water tanks, a flour storage and residential facilities. Some substructures from the late Illyrian-Roman period were discovered on the northern side of the town (towers I – IV).
At the site of the modern town of Stolac there stud the ancient municipium of Diluntum. There are some archaeological findings dating from the 1st to the 4th century BC and an ancient fort. In the Middle Ages the Stolac area belonged to the district of Vidoši. The name Vidovo Polje appears in a Latin translation “Planum Sancti Viti” from 1417. The first specific evidence about Stolac from the Middle Ages, “Loco dicto Stolac”, dates back from the 15th century, the year of 1420. Stolac became a part of the Ottoman sultanate after the Ottoman conquest in the middle of the 15th century. There is no concrete data showing that a garrison was stationed there until the beginning of the 18th century. After the Treaty of Karlowitz was signed in 1699 the town was restored and expanded and was placed under the authority of a dizdar (a fortress commander). Around 1706 the Stolac captaincy was founded. In 1832, the army of Husein-Captain Gradaščević was trying to besiege the town but in vain. In August 1878 the Austrian authority was established.
The historical area – THE OLD TOWN OF STOLAC was proclaimed a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2003.
