The so-called “birthplace’ of general Schérer

General Barthelemy-Louis-Joseph Schérer was born in Delle in 1747 and was an outstanding character of the French Revolution. He died in 1804 in the North of France. We are indebted to him for conscription, which was implemented to replace the army of volunterrs levied in 1792. In 1897 the French Association for Remembrance wanted to celebrate his memory ans had an enamelled cast iron plaque embedded in the wall of his “birthplace’. It is still there although it is a mistake, since at the time of Schérer’s birth, the place was occupied by gardens. The present house wasn’t built until 1826.
