We’re now standing in the old port called Stara Luka. Walk to the water’s edge.
PRESS PAUSE
Now look to your left, following the ramparts. At the far end you’ll see the tower of Saint Luke. Just beside it but separate from the walls is an extension to the fortifications, Revelin Fortress. It was built in 1462 as a defence against the Saracens who occupied Serbia at that time. Now look alongside the fortress where you’ll see some large brick warehouse type structures. These buildings date from the 16th century and were lazarettos or quarantine buildings used to isolate lepers. Nowadays they’re used by artists. Now look to the right where you’ll see another large fortress. This is the Fort of Saint John which dates from the 14th century. It’s now home to the Maritime Museum, the Institute of Biology and a large Aquarium. Now look straight ahead of you – you’ll see a breakwater which protects the port.
