The talented Mr. Ripley

1958. In the United States the young Tom Ripley meets Dickie’s father during a reception

party. Dickie is a rich and spoiled peer, who had left for Italy without giving any

news of him. His father asks Tom to go to Italy and to do everything he can to bring his

son back. Tom had in fact played the part of Dickie’s university peer, by wearing a

jacket of the same university that he had borrowed for the occasion. In Italy, Tom

meets Dickie his girlfriend Marge and their carefree way to live their life with many trips

on the local islands and living on the sea. Tom forgets soon the aim of his travel to Italy,

he knows Dickie better, he becomes his inseparable companion and they both spend

their nights in the local fashionable clubs. One day Dickie gets tired of Tom, he does

not want to see him again and he yells he must leave him alone. Then, on the boat,

Tom hits and kills Dickie, he gets his money and his identity too. The new Tom/Dickie

decides to move to Rome, where he hires an apartment. Here Freddie, an old Dickie’s

friend, turns up and he soon realizes that Dickie (Tom) is hiding something. There is

nothing Tom can do but kill him. Chased by the inspector Roverini, Tom leaves for

Venice, where he meets Dickie’s father and Marge. The parent reads a letter in which

Dickie confessed he would commit suicide, therefore Dickie’s father tells Tom he is not

guilty for what happened. Marge is not sure though, but no one listens at her. Tom

gets a ship to Greece and leaves Italy.

Curiosity

The film and the cast have been awarded with several International prizes. Having the

chance to see all these world renowned actors was an extraordinary event on the

island of Procida.
