Once you reach No. 112 West Church Street, stop and look across the street and you'll see Record Street right in front of you.
No. 112 was once the home of Dr. John Tyler, a well-respected ophthalmologist who performed the first recorded cataract surgery. In addition to this house, he owned the plot of land adjacent to it. In 1814, the city decided to extend Record Street to connect with Patrick Street. The planned extension would run through Tyler's property and along the side of his house.
Tyler did not like the idea of all the noise and the loss of privacy. So before the city roadwork began, Tyler started his own construction project. He build a small house on his plot, right in the middle of the path of the planned road. The city had to abandon its project to extend Record Street. Ever since, the house has been known as the Tyler Spite House, since he built it to "spite" City Hall.
