Thomas Jefferson Memorial
Overview

This Neoclassical style monument dedicated to the US's third President is modeled after Rome's Pantheon. It was dedicated in 1943. Head inside to see the 19-foot statue of Jefferson cast in bronze and the inscriptions of passages from the Declaration of Independence drafted by Jefferson. The memorial seeks to pay homage to Jefferson as a contributor to the country's foundational documents, his service as President, and his role as founder of the University of Virginia. The memorial is a great place to rest after a long walk through American history and politics and reflect on Jefferson's ideas about the relationship between society, government, religion, and politics, as well as on what has changed and what has stayed the same since his time.
