Even for those without plans to visit the Ustyurt Nature Reserve, the modest two-room museum at the reserve’s headquarters is a lovingly curated introduction to the region’s riches. Visitors can inspect fossils and shark teeth found on Ustyurt’s ancient seabeds, giant butterflies, and a desert diorama, while the ethnographic exhibition is better than it has any right to be, with fascinating exhibits like a tuzbastyk, the skin of a horse head that’s been sewn into a leak-proof vessel and embroidered with Kazakh patterns.
