Tropism is a term used to describe how nature adapts to changing conditions. It is a force that should not be underestimated because for millions of years organisms have been adapting and bringing order to what appears to be chaos. It is precisely this adaptive capacity and the relationship between order and chaos that inspired the artist duo Paul Vendel and Sandra de Wolf to create this work.
The artwork 'Verschuiving / Displacement' consists of long, curved steel reinforcing bars. At first glance this too seems chaotic, but on closer inspection you see that the strands are all growing in much the same direction. Usually, we only see steel reinforcing bars on construction sites, but here they have grown towards the light like a plant and are vulnerable and exposed in the church garden. The structure likes to be touched. Feel it and it will vibrate gently, just like a purring cat. It responds to our actions. Here you not only see the transition, but feel it as well.
