Via Praetoria
Overview

The Praetorian Way as it was called, was the road linking the Praetorian Gate to the center of the fort where the Principia, the Headquarters were found. It should be noted that all buildings of the fort (castra in Latin) were sacred as the entire fort itself was considered to be a sacred place. All forts, from Britannia to Syria, from Northern Africa to Dacia were built in the same manner, as the Romans had special engineers and engineering manuals on how to build them. On the sides of the via Pratoria all sorts of buildings were constructed as we shall see further on, for instance barracks of the soldiers and petty officers, stables, armament deposits such as balistaria, water tanks or training grounds and small workshops, where soldiers used to create or repair their kits.
