The monument to Vitus Bering, the founder of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, is the oldest one on the Far East. It was brought here from Petersburg in 1827.
By order of Peter I, Bering commanded the First and Second Kamchatka expeditions, which resulted in the discovery of the Bering Strait between North-East Asia and North America. The Aleutian and the Commander Islands were also discovered by him. Petropavlovsk was founded during the second expedition and was named in honor of the two ships – “St Peter” and “St Paul.”
