William Wichman - B157 Anglican

William was born Konrad Friedrich Willhelm Wichman in 1846 in Hanover in Germany. Between 1876-1879, William was repairing watches at 181 Gibralter Street and had a watchmakers shop there. The celebrated philanthropist and businessman J.G Graves worked in the shop when he was a young man as an apprentice watch maker, making 1 shilling a week. Wichman played a vital role in the tutelage of Graves in the jewellery and watchmaking retail business and industrial networks of Sheffield.  Graves would go on to own his own very successful business, including the innovation of mail order and pay monthly goods. He gifted Graves Park to the city and as its benefactor, the Graves Art Gallery is named after him. William Wichman had a wife named Amelia and a daughter named Sabina. Amelia died before 1911 and William died aged 67 in 1913.
