Shravanabelagola is the name of the town and it is named with reference to the colossal image of Bahubali (Known here as Gommateshwar). The name Shravanabelagola is derived from the words Shravana (the monk) and Bela kola (White Pond).  It is a reference to a clean white pond in the center of the city which is accentuated with and the reflection of the pristine clean image of Bahubali.

For many people who know a bit or have heard about Jainism,  they would consider this statue here as that of Mahaveer.  At times people also mix up considering Mahaveer being same as Bahubali.
